HIE Alexandria - Torpedo Factory Art Center

Accommodations near the Torpedo Factory Art Center

Alexandria, Virginia’s lucky to boast the biggest collection of working artist studios open to the public and under a single roof in the nationally known Torpedo Factory Art Center.

The name gives away this cultural treasure’s backstory: The art center, founded in the mid-1970s, resides in a munitions factory established by the U.S. Navy fresh on the heels of World War I. You can actually eyeball a vintage World War II-era Mark XIV torpedo—an eye-catching green—in the institution’s main hall.

Alexandria's Art Hub

Its warhead-making days are long past, however, and now the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s home to better than 80 working studios, seven art galleries, and fiber and printmaking workshops. You can marvel at painters, ceramicists, sculptors, glassworkers, photographers, jewelry makers, and other artisans in the heady process of creation—and you can buy from them directly, too!

Up on the third floor of the art center, meanwhile, you've got the option of delving into the city’s rich past at the Alexandria Archaeology Museum.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center serves multiple functions, from providing a decked-out space for local artists to work their magic and make their living to serving the community at large with intellectual, aesthetic, and emotional stimulus.
