Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend
There are endless options for celebrating the Yuletide season in greater Washington, D.C., but surely one of the most distinctive holiday events is Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend in Old Town Alexandria.
A Rousing Parade (With Scotties!)
The weekend’s capped by an impressive rain-or-shine parade celebrating the city’s Scottish heritage, with numerous different clans and many members of the centuries-old Saint Andrew’s Society represented. We’re talking tartan-patterned kilts, sporrans, bagpipes, pipe-and-drum brigades, Highland dancers, pintsized packs of Scottie dogs—the whole nine yards.
And this eye-catching musical march also incorporates some major seasonal spirit, given Santa Claus himself joins the proceedings.
Alexandria's Scottish Cred
Alexandria makes a highly appropriate venue for all those flashy tartans and pealing bagpipes. After all, Scotsmen formally founded the city in 1749—among them William Hunter, buried beneath the Old Presbyterian Meeting House. And as this “Visit Alexandria” blogpost notes, the story goes that some of Alexandria’s cobblestones came to the seaport as ballast in the ships of Scottish merchants.
The Campagna Center
Besides being a load of fun, Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend raises money—through the sale of food and wares, holiday home tours, and other events—for the Campagna Center, a non-profit association dedicated to supporting childhood, teen, and adult education in Alexandria.
