Ideal Hotel for the Christmas Illuminations at Mount Vernon
How about spending part of the Yuletide season at George Washington’s old stomping grounds—with the First President himself (kind of) there to greet you?
That’s the winsome appeal of Christmas Illuminations at Mount Vernon, held December 16 and 17 beginning at 5:30 PM. It's a much-loved tradition that makes one of the signal events of the year at Washington's well-preserved estate (which is decked out in Christmas finery through January 6, and open on both Christmas and New Year’s days).
Holiday Cheer—and Holiday Spectacle—at Mount Vernon
While the Christmas Illuminations evenings culminate in a lovely display of fireworks and holiday music over the Potomac River around 9 PM, the lead-up’s chockfull of fantastic all-ages activities that’ll transport you right on back to the father of our country’s heyday.
From demonstrations of 18th-century chocolate-making to period dance lessons led by costumed instructors, Christmas Illuminations is as far from a stale walk through a museum as you can get. Wander the grounds to the soundtrack of choirs, drop in on the 1st Virginia Regiment in winter camp, and swing by the blacksmith shop. There’ll be a dancing bonfire and plentiful hot chocolate and cider—and George and Martha will be on hand to welcome you to the estate.
